A few days ago I saw something that amazed me. The front page of "The Oklahoman" read "Mall Shooter: Sad, Fired, Loveless." Similar headlines can be found elsewhere. While I'm sure this kid lead a very depressing and pathetic life, I would have thought that the 8 dead and 5 wounded deserved more consideration. When this loser started shooting people I would have thought that codling and sympathy would have gone out the window. I'm not saying we shouldn't figure out what made this guy snap. I think we should strive to understand him, but only out of prevention not so we can all relate to him. In my humble opinion killing other people should be done in defense or in war, not as part of a twisted pity party suicide.
Lots of people would like to blame access to guns, which I admit played a part. However I say that it will be societies acceptance of this kind of behavior that causes it to continue into the 21st century. The columbine shooting coverage presented facts about the shooters but always overshadowed them with the consequences of their actions. Now the victims and their families are given little to no consideration . The media should be more responsible when dealing with these issues, focusing on the victims not the idiot. It's just too bad that this particular idiot didn't shoot himself first.
